Announcement from Commissioner Powell regarding an inmate program

Newton County Commissioner Pct 4 Bubba Powell

Heads Up:

Don't be alarmed when you see Newton County inmates working in Precinct 4 this week, these individuals will be clothed in Orange outfits. The inmates will be escorted at all times by an individual with 20+ years of law enforcement experience.

Those inmates (persons) who are selected for this program are non-violent offenders and have been chosen by Sheriff Havard and his Chief Deputy.

My office will not be posting pictures of the inmates faces, for both security reasons and respect for the inmates. I request this same courtesy from all members of the public.

We will only use two inmates during the initial kickoff of the program, after a week or two we will increase to as many as 4 inmates, again non-violent offenders.

Additionally, the inmates that I visited with today were excited about the opportunity to be outside a cell and looking forward to getting exercise. These two gentlemen considered this as an opportunity to pay penitence for their past and work towards a better future.

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please don't hesitate to reach out to Sheriff Colton Havard or myself. It's new, and different but I am hopeful that value is gained in Precinct 4 and in the lives of those participating in the program.
