LIVINGSTON, TX- As we first reported, back on February 17, 2024, 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham of Livingston had been kidnapped and quickly a live-in family friend was arrested as a suspect. Before long her body was found weighted down in the Trinity River, and that family friend was unmasked for what he really was, a predator.
There will never be true justification for Audrii's death, but for now there is Audrii's Law.
Audrii's Law is a new Texas law designed to close a loophole in the state's sex offender registry. It adds child grooming to the list of offenses requiring registration so that parents at least can know if a person has attempted to sexually entice a child in the past.
Don Steven McDougal, who was convicted of capital murder in Audrii's case, had previously been accused of indecency with a child, but he was able to instead plead to "enticing a child" which prevented him from registering as a sex offender.
The law was signed into effect on May 27, 2025, and will take effect on September 1, 2025.
