Newton Volunteer Fire Captain
Melanie Smith said that the department responded to a possible entrapment at 519 E Court St. The home has been struck by a tree during the high winds as Hurricane Beryl made her way through the area Monday.
Smith said that the victims were able to escape the rubble of their home and were outside upon their arrival and were medically assessed for injuries.
Both victims who were apparently upstairs at the time the tree fell, were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. Two other victims were downstairs at that time and weren't injured.
The home belongs to Crystal Riggs of Newton. Victims were Ms Riggs mother and step father.
