Grand Jury clears Newton County Deputy in Officer-Involved Shooting

Newton, TX A Newton County Grand Jury has reviewed the findings today of an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that happened in Newton County on February 21, 2025, and determined that all officers involved acted appropriately and committed no wrongdoing.


In our original article, Friday, February 21, 2025, at 4:09 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, was dispatched to a residence in the 9000 block of FM 2626, in reference to a domestic disturbance. Deputies knew that the suspect had a felony warrant out of Kansas for aggravated assault.


49-year-old Michael Boyd Powers of Bon Wier fled into the woods and climbed into a tool box in a truck that his brother was driving. Once Deputy's stopped the vehicle, Powers came out of the toolbox and pointed a firearm at them. Deputies fired at the man, killing him.


As with any Officer Involved Shooting, the incident was thoroughly investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers Division.

Following a three month investigation, the findings were submitted to the Newton County Criminal District Attorney’s Office and presented to the Grand Jury for review.


In a press release, Sheriff Colton Havard extended his sincere appreciation to all agencies involved for their professionalism and assistance throughout the investigation. "We are grateful for the diligent efforts of the Texas Rangers and the District Attorney’s Office in ensuring a transparent and impartial investigation," Sheriff Havard said.
