Newton Cemetery is a recognized Texas Historical Commission cemetery, located in downtown Newton. The cemetery was established in 1867. The cemetery is home to many ancestors of families that have lived in Newton for generations. With the cemetery being a Texas Historical Cemetery, there are some tremendously interesting stories relating to many of the interred. The Newton History Center has published listings of graves by name and section location. In 2024, the listing will be updated through 2023. If you are interested in gaining one of these comprehensive listings of graves and locations, please contact the Newton History Center and Genealogy Library at 213 Court Street, Newton Texas 409-379-2109.
The Newton Cemetery is maintained by donations and volunteers, there are no paid employees. During 2024 there will be two volunteer maintenance days in which citizens, family members and those interested in community engagement can help weed around headstones, pick up trash, remove old flowers, trim shrubs and fill in low areas in and around graves. These volunteer dates will be announced in January 2024 as SAVE THE DATES. As you consider year end giving, please include Newton Cemetery as one of your entities as your donations support the maintenance of the grounds. Please make checks payable to Newton Cemetery Association and mail to Frida Dillenbeck at 275 CR 4002, Newton Texas 75966.
