Newton County voted to propose a tax rate increase of $500,000 on residents

Today the decision was made to propose a tax rate increase of $500,000.00 on Newton County residents. The vote to propose this increase went as follows:


-County Judge Ronnie Cochran made the motion to increase taxes by $500,000.00 above last year and voted yes for the tax increase.

-Precinct 1 Danny Bentson voted yes for the tax increase.

-Precinct 2 Phillip White voted yes for the tax increase.

-Precinct 3 Tic Fomby voted no against the tax increase.

-Precinct 4 Bubba Powell voted no against tax the increase.


Newton County Commissioner Bubba Powell said, "I will be on air for a live interview to be conducted by the East Texas Banner Thursday night (9/19) at 6:00pm. I will discuss the proposed tax increase, the proposed budget, answer call in questions and to inform Newton County residents of upcoming meetings they can attend to state their opinions on the proposed tax rate and budget."
