As workforce shortages continue to challenge industries across the state, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is tackling the issue head-on through ApprenticeshipTexas—a program that helps Texas employers create cost-effective, customizable training pipelines while offering workers real-world career opportunities.
The success of the program is already showing, especially with major employers like Applied Materials, Inc., which has partnered with ApprenticeshipTexas to train and onboard new technicians faster.
“We are training the future technicians in Texas through ApprenticeshipTexas,” said Clara Neri-Mejia, Global Manufacturing Training Manager at Applied Materials. “The program provides a consistent standard of training, so I know if I can train my technician in Austin, they've been vetted and we can use them throughout the company.”
Registered apprenticeships combine paid, hands-on work experience with classroom instruction and mentorship—creating a win-win for both workers and employers. Upon completion, apprentices earn a nationally recognized credential that paves the way for long-term career growth.
Some of the key benefits to employers include:
Increased productivity and efficiency
Improved employee retention and loyalty
Better profitability and ROI
Greater workforce diversity
Built-in mentorship from experienced staff
TWC supports businesses through every step of building their program—from planning and registration to recruiting and launching. Whether in traditional trades like construction and manufacturing or emerging fields like healthcare and information security, ApprenticeshipTexas helps employers grow their talent pool with highly skilled workers.
“Apprenticeships help workers gain the skills, experience, and industry connections to create a successful career,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel. “TWC’s ApprenticeshipTexas program supports models that close skills gaps and help Texas businesses thrive.”
The ApprenticeshipTexas Conference will be held on September 25–26, 2025, at the Sheraton Hotel in Dallas. Attendees will receive hands-on guidance and hear success stories from across the state.
