Deweyville, Texas – Students at Deweyville High School got a hands-on look into the world of law enforcement this week as Newton County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Ortego visited their criminal justice class.

The session covered key topics including the principles of law, code of criminal procedure, and the penal code. Students also had the opportunity to apply their knowledge through mock scenarios, bringing real-world context to what they’re learning in the classroom.

Sheriff Colton Havard said the department values opportunities like this to connect with students and spark interest in careers that serve the community.

“The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is proud to share law enforcement knowledge with our youth to help develop future leaders of our communities,” Sheriff Havard said.

The presentation is part of the Sheriff’s Office’s ongoing efforts to build relationships with young people and highlight the importance of public service.
