Newton County S.O. Purchases Drone with Thermal Imaging Capability:
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the recent purchase of a DJI Matrice 4 drone equipped with thermal imaging technology. This state-of-the-art drone will serve as a force multiplier for our county, enhancing our ability to conduct search and rescue operations, manhunts, and a variety of other law enforcement responses.
Captain Jimmy Smith successfully completed the required training and obtained his FAA Part 107 Unmanned
Aircraft System (UAS) pilot certification, authorizing him to operate the drone in a commercial law enforcement
capacity.
With its thermal imaging capabilities, the drone will be effective in low-light and nighttime operations. We are committed to ensuring this resource benefits the entire community and will make it available to any governmental agency within Newton County when needed. Upon request, we will deploy the drone and a certified operator to assist. We look forward to utilizing this cutting-edge technology to better serve and protect the residents of Newton County.
