Last Thursday, July 24, the Newton Food Share saw record-breaking community support during its monthly food distribution—and leading the charge were members of the Newton Eagles football team.
Six standout players—Cavland Hunter, Braylon Watson, R’chon Washington, Dylan Walker, Kendray Porter, and Draydyn King—volunteered their time to help distribute food to families in need. Accompanied by Coach Doug Samples, the young athletes worked side by side with staff and volunteers, bringing both muscle and morale to the operation.
“The Eagles were busy last week helping our community,” Newton ISD Sports Page proudly shared on Facebook. “We’re so thankful for their commitment to giving back.”
The Newton Food Share echoed those sentiments:
“We were honored to have 7 Newton Eagle Football players volunteer their time at our food distribution! Coach Doug Samples accompanied the players. They were enthusiastic and fun to work with! We appreciate the support from AD Drew Johnston and NISD.”
Joe Miller, Chairman of the Newton Food Share Board of Directors, also praised the students and staff:
“Today we set a record for the month. The number of people and families served will be announced shortly. I want to thank Coach Doug Samples and Head Coach Drew Johnston for sending such fine young men to help. These players set an example—not just for other youth, but for us adults too.”
The Newton Food Share, located at the old hospital on Main Street, has been serving families since 2004. Operating more like a grocery store with “really good prices (free!),” the organization distributes food to over 300 families each month, representing roughly 800 individuals.
Families receive essential items like meat, canned vegetables, cereal, rice, peanut butter, and more, with larger families receiving additional quantities. Food is primarily sourced from the Southeast Texas Food Bank and local Brookshire Brothers stores, along with support from community food drives.
Upcoming Food Distribution Dates:
Thursday, August 14 – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Thursday, August 28 – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
509 Main St., Newton, TX 75966
Bring proof of address in Newton to register. Quick Pass recommended.
The Newton Eagles aren’t just making moves on the field—they’re stepping up for their community in a big way. And by all accounts, this team’s heart is just as strong as their hustle.
