South East Texas — With dangerous heat index values forecast across southeast Texas and portions of Louisiana, local officials are urging residents to take precautions and stay cool through midweek.
The National Weather Service has issued two consecutive heat advisories, warning that heat index values could reach between 105 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit on both Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT.
The advisory affects central, south central, southwest, and west central Louisiana as well as southeast Texas. Health officials caution that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
Authorities recommend the following safety tips:
Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Avoid prolonged time outdoors, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and seek out shade when possible.
Stay in air-conditioned spaces and avoid direct sunlight.
Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and pets.
Residents engaging in outdoor work or recreation should take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, or lack of sweating.
